"A beautiful campus overlooking the historic Delaware River. A tradition-rich liberal arts college. A selective enrollment small enough to make you feel like you belong to a real community. A college large enough to give you unique opportunities across the arts, sciences and engineering. This is Lafayette. Cur Non is our rallying cry and it means ‘Why not?’: Why not have the courage and confidence to take risks, connect ideas and care deeply about your community. Why not engage in every aspect of campus life to create your own destiny. Why not use your intellect, talent, energy, and humanity to find your place in the world." (Lafayette At A Glance)
Lafayette’s vision to create a dynamic atmosphere that embraces exploration, personal connection, and community is an ideal fit for our SHE-CAN scholars, and is the reason why Lafayette is one of our strongest partners today.
Since our relationship began in 2013, we have had three scholars from our program join the Lafayette community – Flavia Umulisa (Class of 2017), Jocelyn Mizero (Class of 2018), and Phalkun Out (Class of 2020). This growing Lafayette coalition enriches each young woman’s experience because our scholars are able to form close friendships and lay the foundation for strong bonds between our Cambodian and Rwandan cohorts.
Most importantly, Lafayette goes above and beyond to create a welcoming environment for these young women and give them the support that they need to achieve their dreams. Our scholars are leaders on campus, have travelled internationally on humanitarian expeditions, and shared a piece of Rwandan culture by performing a traditional dance at Lafayette’s Intercultural Day.
We are equally impressed by Lafayette’s commitment to deepening their blossoming relationship with SHE-CAN. In fact, Eugene Gabay from Lafayette Admissions traveled to Cambodia in 2015 to meet each of our SHE-CAN scholars. This makes Lafayette the only SHE-CAN school to make a personal, one-on-one visit with to scholars in-country. We are thankful to have Lafayette on-board as an official SHE-CAN school and we look forward to watching our scholars thrive there in the years to come.
