WHY PARTNER WITH SHE-CAN?
To Change the World, We Need Women in Leadership
Growing women’s leadership is widely considered to be a systemic solution to many of today’s global issues. Yet women, especially low-income women in developing nations, lack opportunities to gain the tertiary education and leadership skills needed to take on influential roles. In many developing nations, a US college degree is often an unstated requirement for attaining an influential leadership position. Change won’t happen until a significant number of women gain the education and leadership skills needed to take on important roles and support each other in shaping decisions and cultural norms. Coalition Schools Build Collective Female Power SHE-CAN brings colleges together to do just that. Through supporting SHE-CAN’s female scholars who come from the same five post-conflict nations, Coalition schools are working in tandem to build collective female power in the places that need it most. As more schools join the Coalition, and more and more graduates return home in larger and larger numbers, ever-growing cohorts of educated, empowered, highly networked women will be ready to bring their collective power to changing their communities and nations. Coalition Schools Get a New Leader on Campus The agreement is a win/win—SHE-CAN scholars receive a world-class education, and schools receive a highly vetted scholar who was selected for her personal drive and leadership skills. Our scholars become campus leaders who act as ambassadors for their country, and bring new backgrounds, perspectives and experiences to the classroom and campus culture. |
"SHE-CAN scholars get involved. Our academic and residential programs have been enriched by our four scholars -- each have become very active by exploring what Gettysburg has to offer and becoming leaders in their own way.”
-Gail Sweezey, Dean of Admissions, Gettysburg College |
HOW TO JOIN THE COALITION
SHE-CAN is looking to expand its Scholarship Coalition from 13 to 20 schools by July 1, 2020. SHE-CAN’s college coalition schools sign an MOU (click here for a draft copy), stating their agreement to accept at least one scholar in ED, as long as she meets their admission requirements. After having a scholar on campus, many schools choose to sign multi-year commitments. Colleges cover the costs of full-tuition, room and board. SHE-CAN covers everything else including SAT prep, immigration documents, flights, dorm supplies, computer, phone, health insurance, books and emergency support. In addition, SHE-CAN helps each scholar win prestigious internships, gain leadership skills, and acclimate and thrive emotionally with a supportive, loving team of five mentors who become her family in her new country.
