NOTE: In order for your application to be considered, you must include high school transcripts/grades, National Exam scores, and college transcripts. Without seeing your grades, we cannot include you in the interview process.

Apply to Be a Scholar
We are looking for young Cambodian and Rwandan female leaders interested in applying for U.S. undergraduate scholarships to join our program for 2019. Check out a list of our past scholarship winners here! Below is an overview of our program and how to apply.
What We Do
We assist young women who are passionate about attending a U.S. college or university but need guidance in how to apply. Those selected to be in the program will attend an immersive internet course from January 2019 through June 2019 to prepare for two college entrance exams: IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and the ACT (American College Testing). Those who perform well are matched with a team of 5 - 6 mentors in the U.S. to “help” or “mentor” them throughout the process of applying for scholarships at U.S. colleges and universities. Over the internet and phone, mentors will assist scholars with the various tasks required, such as deciding which schools to apply to, reviewing the application and essay, and making phone calls to the school to introduce the scholar. The scholar and mentors are in constant contact over the internet. Once a scholar is awarded a scholarship, SHE-CAN will fund some of the non-scholarship costs that her family cannot afford such as a flight, books, and health insurance. SHE-CAN will also host a mandatory Leadership Summit for all scholars once per year. Every SHE-CAN scholar accepted into the program commits to return home within one year of graduation and live in their home country for at least three years.
What We Don’t Do
SHE-CAN does not award scholarships and being accepted into SHE-CAN does not mean you have been awarded a scholarship. You must first score well on the IELTS and ACT exams, and if you do, we will assist you in applying for scholarships at U.S. universities. We have close relationships with many U.S. schools, so applying through SHE-CAN will increase your chances of winning a scholarship. Applying and winning a scholarship is completely the scholar’s responsibility, but the mentors are available to help with the process and overcome administrative barriers that often limit the chances of women outside the U.S.
Costs To You
U.S. schools decide on a case-by-case basis what costs the scholarship will cover and what they will not cover. Therefore, if you are fortunate enough to be awarded a U.S. scholarship, there may be financial responsibilities that you would need to raise your own money to cover. These could include: the one time fee to confirm your place at the school, daily living expenses, medical expenses not covered by your health insurance, etc. However, it is difficult to know at this stage what those costs may be and you should not let those costs prevent you from applying.
To be in our program you will need constant, very strong internet access (which you could access at school or an internet café if you do not have access in your home). If you don’t have or can’t afford to be on the internet every day, it would inhibit your ability to be successful in the SHE-CAN program.
SHE-CAN candidates need to work very hard between the months of January to June 2018. Therefore, accepted candidates are not permitted to have a full-time job and ideally not even a part-time job during that time period in order to complete the program. If you must work full-time between January and June, you do not qualify for the program.
U.S. University Application Process and Timing
If you are accepted into SHE-CAN, you will spend January through June 2018 working online on IELTS and ACT preparation courses and completing a volunteer project that you initiate (the guidelines of the project will be explained once accepted). Between June and October 2018, you will complete your university applications with the help of your mentors. Therefore, once the IETLS and ACT courses are complete, you will be busy researching schools, writing your student essays, completing the school and financial aid applications and gathering recommendations, transcripts and bank records. The work is intense and to do it well we ask that you not work.
SHE-CAN has developed relationships with U.S. schools that have joined our SHE-CAN Scholarship Coalition and guaranteed places for our scholars. Currently, we have relationships with 11 schools, and we're continually working to increase that number. These relationships ensure that if you are accepted into the program as a SHE-CAN scholar in June 2018, after your college examinations and leadership projects are complete, the chances of you winning a scholarship to one of the schools in the SHE-CAN Coalition is very high. SHE-CAN Application Process and Timing
To apply to SHE-CAN, you must fill out the SHE-CAN Application (for Cambodia or Rwanda) and send us your transcripts and national exam scores if available. The application and transcripts will take you some time to gather and complete. We will begin accepting applications July 1 and will continue to accept them through October 1 in Rwanda and November 1 in Cambodia. The program is competitive, so the sooner you apply the better.
Required Application Documents
If you are interested, please fill out the online SHE-CAN Application (for Cambodia or Rwanda) and upload your documents on the site.
Academic Records: A scanned copy of your last three years of high school grades or transcripts (grade S4, S5 and S6 in Rwanda or grade 10, 11 and 12 in Cambodia), your university transcripts (if relevant), and your National Exam Scores. If your scores are not in English, please provide a translated copy (does not need to be official - you can translate the scores yourself for our application).
Test Scores: If you have taken either the ACT, SAT, TOEFL, or IELTS exam, please have a copy of your scores ready to upload to your application.
Priority will be given to applications that have attached all required records. If you do not have your National Exam Scores, please let us know when you will receive them and send them as soon as you get them. If the transcripts are not included, we will disregard your application. It is your responsibility to include them with the application; given the number of applications we cannot follow-up to ask candidates for missing documents.

Who We're Looking For
We’re looking for women who are:
• Between 18 and 23 years old
• Passionate about returning home to improve the conditions of their country
• Academically VERY STRONG,
meaning consistently ranked high in class (1-10) and scored strongly on the National Exam. This is important because U.S. universities are challenging and only accept those with the highest grades.
• Graduating high school before 2019
• Interested in a U.S. undergraduate
degree (not accepting graduate degree-seeking students)
• From a low-income household
• Strong English speakers,
which is critical because all U.S. universities require a high score on the IELTS/TOEFL language exam. Therefore, if your English is not strong, we recommend that you spend a year studying and apply next year.
• Already leaders in their school or community
• Able to access a strong internet connection and computer daily (this is very important and there are no exceptions)
• Living within 1 hour of country's capital city
• Dedicated to the program, meaning able to dedicate their days in February through June 2018 to complete the program. You must agree to not work at a full-time job during this period.
Key Evaluative Criteria
Only apply if you are strong in all four areas:
Language: Strong command of written and spoken English.
Academic Excellence: High class ranking and strong grades in high school and high score on the National Exam.
Leadership Abilities: Have participated as a leader in several activities.
Reliable and Consistent Internet Access: Can be on the internet for several hours every day.
