Class of 2023
Chakriya Ou or “Riya,” is a rising junior at Gettysburg College, majoring in Economics with a minor in Data Science. This summer, she interns at Transparency International Cambodia, where she works closely with WYEL (Women and Youth Empowerment in Leadership Program) staffs and youths to ensure successful delivery of planned activities including trainings, workshops, advocacy campaigns and youth-led projects.
At Gettysburg, she is a part of Gettysburg’s President Advisory Group for Inclusion and Belonging, and Alpha Phi Omega. She also works as a Musselman library student supervisor where she assists in training new student hires and overseeing overall user services performance and a Peer Research Mentor which she helps students with their research process from brainstorming to finding sources and checking citations. In her first year, she was also selected to represent Gettysburg at the National Leadership & Diversity Convention.
Before joining SHE-CAN and coming to the U.S., Riya organized a fundraiser to buy basic study materials for 47 primary school students back in her hometown in Kampong Cham province, Cambodia and was a very involved youth participant at Transparency International Cambodia in which she attended trainings, implemented a community project, went on a study tour in Malaysia and invited as a guest speaker on a national radio show to talk about her involvement in social activities. Riya is passionate about economic development, education, leadership, and women and youth empowerment. She believes that women and youth’s participation in decision making at both national and sub-national levels are very crucial to Cambodia’s development.
