Class of 2026
Deborah Karny Gonkpah will be attending Bucknell University in Fall 2022. She
grew up in Buchanan with her parents and four siblings; her mom is a teacher and her dad
is a pharmacist’s assistant. Deborah graduated as one of the top 3 students of her class
and one of the top scorers in Grand Bassa County for Liberia’s national exam, the
WASSCE. She was also awarded the Nyonblee Care Foundation Scholarship and the
prestigious Weah Learn Project Scholarship by the Minister of Finance. While in high
school, Deborah served as Class Secretary, Executive Director of the Health and
Environmental Club, Captain of her school’s female academic Quiz Bowl team, second
speaker of her debate team and later, Vice President of her senior class. While in the tenth
grade in 2018, she was selected to represent Liberia on the Kennedy-Lugar Youth
Exchange and Study program (KLYES)-a one year study abroad in the US.
Deborah is the founder and CEO of We Can Liberia, a non-profit youth
organization which aims at inspiring Liberia through sanitation, education and
entrepreneurship (SEE). Deborah has hosted many radio shows on sex education and
proper sanitation awareness and raised funds for the Modoc orphanage home, the
Buchanan prison compound, and the government hospital in Buchanan. This led to her
aspirations in the public sector and medical field. She has donated school materials to 135
girls and 43 boys in Bong, Grand Bassa, and rural Montserrado and currently she has 5
underprivileged students benefitting from her We Can Liberia scholarship platform.
Deborah believes that knowledge is power and it is a tool woman can use to activate their
potentials. She believes in women’s empowerment and participation and hopes to educate
50 girls by 2030 through We Can Liberia.
