Jennifer Maxwell attends Muhlenberg College, where she studies business and entrepreneurship to help create new jobs in her community to reduce the unemployment rate, which she sees as a major hurdle for her country’s development. While originally from Monrovia, Jennifer’s family fled Liberia during the civil war and lived in Sierra Leone for some time. When she was eleven, Jennifer was adopted by a new family, although her adoptive parents have since passed away. After that, Jennifer's siblings stepped up and raised her. She is grateful for the support and unconditional love they have given her and how they have driven her to continuously succeed and persevere.
She is passionate about women’s health and literacy, especially poetry. She believes that writing poetry is a therapy session that one does not worry about the fee attached. In 2018, she was named one of the winners of the Liberian Counties Meet Peace Poetry Competition. Jennifer’s passion for women’s health in her home country led her to establish an organization called RED, an acronym for Real Education for Dignity, which empowers girls through awareness of menstruation, menstrual hygiene, and the making of reusable menstrual pads so that they don’t miss school due to not having access to feminine hygiene products. While on campus, Jennifer serves as the acting president of the youth advisory panel at the Jewel Starfish Foundation, an organization that provides scholarships and mentorship to girls across Liberia. She provides leadership to the youths and collaborates with the foundation’s board to establish long term goals and policies for scholarship beneficiaries. Furthermore, Jennifer serves as a planning coordinator at Smiling Faces International, and she remotely assists with developing programs and implementing policies, at the Liberian Poet Society. |
