Lisa Noma was an amazing mentor to Lafayette College senior Jocelyn Mizero and they shared a special bond that will never be broken. As part of a 5 woman mentor team, Lisa helped Jocelyn win a scholarship to Lafayette, and then helped her thrive as a pre-med student.
She and Jocelyn did many things together, from moving Jocelyn into her dorm room in Easton, PA before her first day of college to celebrating Jocelyn’s very first Christmas in the United States (the photo of them in matching onesies will live on in infamy!). We know they talked endlessly on the phone, and Lisa loved bringing Jocelyn to NYC to see the big city. Most importantly, Lisa was always there for a good cry when life got tough. She was the kind of mentor that every college student would dream of having.
Lisa's death was also a huge blow to all of us in the office. She had such an amazing, generous spirit; her presence was truly a gift. She attended almost all our events and worked with us part-time for many years, jumping in when we needed help. We loved her fresh ideas, clear perspectives and especially her hilarious stories. The office was brighter and more fun when Lisa was around.
As her dear friend and fellow mentor Carol Chang said, “You showed us what a life filled with laughter, rainbows, fur hats, rompers, music and unconditional love looked like.” Her legacy will live on at SHE-CAN, but there will never be anyone like Lisa.
She was her own unique soul and we will miss her forever.
At the request of Lisa’s parents’ Lynn and Mike Noma, donations made to SHE-CAN in Lisa’s memory will help
more young women like Jocelyn grow into leaders - a goal we know was very important to Lisa.
