Socheata Huot is starting her freshmen year at Lafayette in the fall. She lived with her family in a village in the Kampong Cham province of Cambodia, where the availability of English education is limited. After finishing high school, she was selected to live at the Harpswell Foundation where she found herself living in a girls-only community and growing in her leadership skills. In her junior year, Socheata became the vice-president of the self-study team. The self-study team helped to coordinate classes and the management team’s work for 32 students at the Harpswell Foundation.
Socheata is passionate about sustainable development and improving living standards. She joined the Live-Green competition organized by the U.S Ambassador’s Youth Council, supported by the U.S Embassy in Phnom Penh. Her team placed in the top 3 in research and design, and they focused on using recycled plastic bags to achieve sustainable construction material. Socheata likes to explore various fields where she could positively impact society. She participated in a debate organized by Transparency International under the theme “Inclusive Public Service.’’ During this process, she learned about the possibilities for better public service in Cambodia through finding a solution and making policy in debate. Socheata would love to contribute her skills and knowledge to public projects with the purpose of bettering Cambodia. She is very excited for her upcoming journey in the U.S as a civil engineering student. |
